The Lanarkshire Research Scholar Programme advertises its first PhD studentship in collaboration with the University of West of Scotland
The University of West of Scotland and NHS Lanarkshire are working together to support a Phd Studentship at UWS focusing on advancing practitioner knowledge and practice within acute hospital wards in relation to working with older people with dementia during episodes of hyperactive delirium
Why this topic for a PhD?
Older inpatients with dementia are particularly susceptible to delirium which is associated with poor outcomes including premature admission to care homes and mortality. Delirium management is urgent, complex and optimal outcomes for individual and family requires a team approach delivered with compassion. The thesis aim is: to collaboratively advance practitioner knowledge and practice within acute hospital wards in relation to working with older people with dementia during episodes of hyperactive delirium. An action research methodology will be used, drawing on the principles of appreciative enquiry and realistic evaluation to shape the action cycles. The student will work collaboratively with staff (e.g.nurses, doctors, AHPs) from participating NHS sites to explore interactions and strategies that work well to enhance the experience of patients, family and staff during this acute phase. The results will inform future practice models for caring for patients and families during hyperactive delirium episodes.

If you are currently working in NHS Lanarkshire a secondment opportunity would be considered.
Funding Notes
UWS is an inspiring, vibrant place to study with a growing research community; an important aspect of which is its outstanding and committed research students.
Successful candidates will receive an £13,726 annual stipend payable for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £3900).
This studentship is open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline. Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.
Interviews will take place 18th December 2013. The successful candidate must be available to commence their studies 1st February 2014.
