PhD Studentship for nanophotonics research: producing novel and cost effective photonic/plasmonic devices

Project Description

A PhD opportunity exists at the Nanoscale Laboratory, School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Birmingham for conducting interdisciplinary research at the interface of photonics, nanoparticles and materials, electro-optical devices and sensors. The candidate will explore the novel properties of various nanomaterials based on carbon (graphene/carbon nanotubes) and metals (gold/silver nanoparticles). Based on their properties the nanomaterials will be utilised for producing novel and cost effective photonic/plasmonic devices such as metamaterials and optical biosensors. The research work will comprise of finite element method simulations, nanofabrication, and experimental characterisation of nanophotonic devices.

The candidate should be qualified to at least first degree level (above 70%) with a first class honors degree (high 2:1) in one of the following disciplines Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Physics or Optics.

A background in optics or nano-photonics will be helpful.

Previous experience in lithography, clean room hand experience, FIB and electron microscopy characterisation experience is advantageous, although full training will be provided.

Funding Notes

For excellent applicants (very good first degree), there is the potential for funding for Home / EU students that will cover fees at the current Home / EU student rate and a stipend. Overseas students are welcome to apply but should note that they will be required to be either completely self-funding, or to obtain full/partial funding for other sources.


Applications comprising a detailed CV highlighting the previous qualifications (with grades/percentage/CGPA received) and photonics related projects undertaken and publications should be sent to Dr Haider Butt. Emphasis should be given to the past optics experience.

The CVs not mentioning the exact grades will not be considered.
