Development of a novel non-linear structural health monitoring method for large reinforced concrete structures
Reinforced concrete is widely used in the construction of structures that span virtually all structural types and sizes and scales. Examples range from floor slabs in residential apartment blocks to large span bridge systems. The popularity of reinforced concrete is attributed to its relative low cost, widespread availability, performance and durability over long periods of time, at different levels of exposure in different environments.
The present project aims to enhance and extend the life of high value reinforced concrete structures such as bridges, dams, etc.. The researcher will spearhead the development of highly responsive, smart structural health monitoring systems that, used intermittently or continuously as part of a structural maintenance strategy, can provide early warning of deterioration or damage to facilitate prompt maintenance work to be undertaken.
Achieving this objective requires the application of theory, computer simulation / numerical modelling, and experimental testing, all leading to the development of a validated methodology.
The successful candidate should have, or expect to have an Honours Degree at 2.1 or above (or equivalent) in Civil or Structural Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Material Science with knowledge of Computer programming for scientific applications; laboratory and field-based experimental methods in engineering; engineering dynamics and applied mathematics.
There is no funding attached to this project it is for self-funded students only.
