Development of cold-formed steel elements for affordable and sustainable multi-storey buildings
In multi-storey construction, hot-rolled steel sections have been successfully used for more than 150 years. Hot-rolled sections, however, can be heavy and inefficient due to the limited number of standard section sizes, shapes and lengths available. The use of lighter and cost effective structural materials in building construction is becoming more important world-wide to reduce the environmental footprint. Cold-formed steel (CFS) sections are less expensive to manufacture, offer far greater flexibility for production and provide a high strength-to-weight ratio. Hence if appropriately designed they could lead to more affordable and sustainable building solutions. Compared to hot-rolled sections, CFS sections are more susceptible to local buckling due to large width-to-thickness ratios of their thin-walled elements and produce relatively low stiffness and strength in joints.
This project aims to investigate the use of cold-formed steel elements as main load bearing components of multi-storey structural systems. The objectives are to increase local buckling resistance and to develop appropriate joint detailing for CFS structures up to 6-storey height subject to the extreme loading conditions.
ABAQUS FE Package will be employed to perform detailed stress analysis and extensive parametric studies on nonlinear post-buckling behaviour of CFS sections which will lead to development of design rules and guidance.
Successful completion of the project and publication of its results will likely lead to significant application in the CFS industry which is rapidly growing in the UK.
Applicants must hold, or expect to receive, a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in Civil or Structural Engineering. Knowledge of: Structural Steel Design and Finite Element Analysis
