Project Description

Applications are invited for a 3.5 year studentship to use the next generation of ultrafast lasers for the fluorescence imaging of single molecules and nanoparticles. The project will be supervised by Dr. Steven Magennis, and the applicant will join an interdisciplinary group of physicists, chemists and biologists who are developing and applying advanced single-molecule fluorescence methods [1].

The ability to study individual molecules and particles has revolutionised our understanding of their structure, dynamics and function. We recently demonstrated that the combination of a broadband ultrafast laser and a pulse shaper has the potential to be a powerful new tool for single-molecule imaging [2]. In this PhD project, you will build on these results to develop a novel and versatile single-molecule microscope. This will take advantage of the new state of the art broadband laser system and pulse shaper that has recently been installed in the Magennis labs in Glasgow. You will gain experience of femtosecond lasers, fluorescence microscopy, multiphoton excitation and single-molecule detection.

Applicants should have a first degree (minimum 2:1) in a relevant subject (e.g. physics, chemistry). They should be highly ambitious and be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary research environment. The focus of this project is on developing a new laser-based microscopy for studying single molecules, so any prior experience of lasers, optics, microscopy or single-molecule methods will be an advantage.

Funding Notes

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK and EU applicants, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (£14,296 for Session 2016-17). The studentship is available from 1st October onwards.
