About the Project

A major upgrade of the ATLAS experiment is required to support High Luminosity operation of the LHC after normal LHC running completes at the end of 2022. The HL-LHC is generally recognised as the next major step in particle physics at the energy frontier as outlined in recent strategy documents for Europe and the USA. The largest component of the detector upgrade is the full replacement of the inner tracking system. The project will involve work on hardware to complete the development of tracking detectors able to withstand the extreme rate and radiation levels at the HL-LHC and studies of the extended physics reach achievable with the factor of ten increase in data to be achieved by HL-LHC running. Travel to collaborating institutes in the UK and overseas, as well as to CERN, will be required during this studentship.

Funding Notes

This research project is one of a number of projects at this institution. It is in competition for funding with one or more of these projects. Usually the project which receives the best applicant will be awarded the funding. The funding is only available to UK citizens or those who have been resident in the UK for a period of 3 years or more.
