The Internet of Things (IoT) envisages numerous applications using a large number of “objects” interconnected and accessible via the Internet. The wide range of applications that will use the IoT will inevitably attract nefarious users who seek to compromise legitimate users, e.g. to gain financial advantage. Thus, there is an immediate need to engineer appropriate security measures into IoT architectures.

To prevent attacks against IoTs, various security mechanisms have been proposed. However, a study into the balance of usability versus security is still lacking. In this project, we will design new security mechanisms with improved usability. (1) We will explore new computing and communication techniques to see whether or not new security mechanisms based on these techniques can improve usability without sacrificing security. (2) We will also design visualization tools to see if they can help users to manage these mechanisms, i.e. choose proper mechanisms in different IoT application scenarios.

物联网带来了众多的新应用的同时,也引发了无数的安全隐患。因而针对物联网的可用机制成了一个迫切的研究方向。目前研发人员提出了众多的安全机制,但怎样兼顾其可用性和安全性,仍然是一个没有解决的问题。
在此博士项目中,我们主要从两个方面来试图解决这个问题。(1)探索和发现可以兼顾可用性和安全性的新的网络和通信技术,例如软件定义网络和多信道通信协议等。(2)使用可视化分析工具来帮助用户了解,评估和管理安全风险。

Funding Notes

Requirements:
The candidate should have a first class or upper second class honours degree, or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification), in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (preferably with focus on Security, Embedded System, or Networks). Evidence of good spoken and written English is essential. The candidate should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, or an equivalent qualification, if the first language is not English. This position is open to all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality.

Degree:
The student will be awarded a PhD degree from the University of Liverpool (UK) upon successful completion of the program.

Funding:
The PhD studentship is available for three years subject to satisfactory progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years (currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly stipend of 3500 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during the period of the award. It is a condition of the award that holders of XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to three months, if this is required by the project.
