Optical sensing for industrial applications

Photonics is instrumental in modern life and the technologies developed for optical communications can also be used to develop optical measurement systems. Our research covers a range of optical systems for metrology applications. This includes optical fibre Bragg grating sensors, optical fibre interferometry, tunable laser spectroscopy, photo-acoustic spectroscopy, laser generated ultrasound and photo-acoustic imaging. The applications for this research includes industrial process monitoring, trace gas detection, condition monitoring, structural health monitoring and medical applications.

The project aims to develop miniaturised optical sensors for photoacoustic spectroscopy and to investigate the potential for multiple gas species detection, optical multiplexing and explore mid-IR spectroscopy.

The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team with international experience in optical system development. The research will be carried out in the Centre for Microsystems and Photonics (http://www.strath.ac.uk/eee/research/cmp/) within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering of the University of Strathclyde.
