Project Description

This project is open to applicants wishing to be considered for the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellowship Programme, Fellows with Industrial Research Enhancement (FIRE) https://www.bath.ac.uk/jobs/Vacancy.aspx?ref=FY4063.

We live in a three-dimensional world and interact with fascinating geometric structures in all places, ranging from the urban areas and architectural buildings we live, to the furnishings and products we use. Recent advances in computer graphics have resulted in a number of innovative acquisition and modelling technologies, making geometric data largely available across different areas of science, engineering, and medicine.

Developing computational tools to effectively process geometric structures has the potential to reform almost every aspect of our life. This project primarily focuses on shape analysis and modelling that helps to understand the function of a geometric structure, and explore new geometric structures under functional constraints. The guiding principle is that function and geometry are closely coupled. High level functions can be interpreted from the underlying geometric properties of individual shapes and their interrelations, such as symmetry, similarity, regularity, etc.

The outcome of this project would be novel computational tools that can infer and visualize functions of geometric structures, and novel computer-aided design tools that involve functional constraints while exploring novel structures. Candidates will be considered from any relevant discipline, especially Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. Candidates with previous experience on computer graphics and shape modelling are particularly welcome.

Based on Dr. Yang’s previous work, the successful candidate will initially explore a range of geometric structures in different computational design contexts, such as urban planning, architecture, computational arts, etc., to see the correlation between geometry and function, and then select particular models for computational analysis and design exploration.

The candidate will join the visual computing group of seven academic staff, ten postdoctoral researchers and many PhD students working in the area of computer graphics and computer vision, which will provide a stimulating environment for carrying out this project. The visual computing group is supported by over £20 million in grants, and lead The Centre for Digital Entertainment (in partnership with Bournemouth University) and the interdisciplinary Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA). The group is working closely with assistive technologies and world leading companies, which will provide great opportunities to deliver commercial impact from the outcome of this project.

We require a minimum of a good first degree (equivalent to a First class or Upper Second Class Honours) in computer science or a related discipline. All non-UK applicants must meet the English language requirements of the University of Bath, Science Graduate School (currently a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall, with at least 6.0 in each of the four components).

In addition, those applying for a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship should hold a masters level qualification or equivalent experience, must comply with the EU definition of Early Stage Researchers (specifically not hold a doctoral degree) and must not have resided, or carried out their main activity (work or studies), in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the start of the Fellowship start date.

Funding Notes

Candidates awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship will receive a salary of £17,000 per annum on a fixed term basis of up to 4 years.

Yongliang Yang is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Bath. His research interests are in shape understanding, computational design and computer graphics. Yongliang has served on program committees of multiple graphics conferences including Symposium on Geometry Processing, Pacific Graphics and Shape Modelling International. He is a recipient of the Computer Aided Geometric Design Most Cited Paper Award in 2011 and 2012 [1]. His work [2] has been highlighted in the Communications of the ACM in 2013.

Peter Hall is a Professor in Computer Science and director of the Media Technology Research Centre (MTRC) at Bath; He has 18 years of experience as an academic, during which time he has built collaborations with many international institutions not limited to the University Konstanz, University of Amsterdam, and Berkeley. He founded the Vision, Video, and Graphics network of excellence in 2003 that helped cement the convergence agenda in the UK. He is best known for his work on non-photorealistic rendering and modelling. His work regularly features in the media, including newspapers across the world, CNN Europe, and most recently in 2012, New Scientist.
