Project Description

This PhD project will apply the principle of multiple and double kinetic resolution (KR) to the enantioselective synthesis of helicenes, cyclophanes and azaferrocene compounds which are important a scaffolds for chiral ligands, and in the case of helicenes and cyclophanes are also sought after for applications in nonlinear optical and electronic materials. Unlike the widely used procedures of KR and dynamic-KR, double-KR is a virtually unexplored process and yet show promise as a powerful strategy for enantioselective synthesis, especially with substrates with C2 symmetry where an efficient one-pot double-KR procedure is possible.

A bench fee is also payable on top of the tuition fee to cover specialist equipment or laboratory costs required for the research. The amount charged annually will vary considerably depending on the nature of the project and applicants should contact the primary supervisor for further information about the fee associated with the project.
