About the Project

Sheffield is a key player in the world-leading dark matter experiment DRIFT that is seeking a directional signal for SUSY Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), the favoured candidate to explain the missing dark matter of the Universe. This will prove that WIMPs exist in the galaxy. Participate in detector R&D using optical and gas charge readout technology; operation of the working DRIFT II experiments at the UK’s new deep underground laboratory at Boulby; construction and/or data analysis with US collaborators of DRIFT II including analysis to search for Supersymmetric dark matter particles with a directional signal; development of new ultra-low background gas detectors and readout electronics schemes; design and construction towards CYGNUS, a new global experiment aimed to be world’s largest directional DM detector; development of analysis code for track reconstruction; optimization and data analysis for extraction of neutralino limits and track directional information. Possibility to work in Los Angeles, New Mexico (USA), Korea and Australia.
