About This PhD Project

Project Description

The Sheffield group is acknowledged by STFC as having the best programme of spin-out activity designed for using particle physics technology in industry and for society. I can offer three projects in this area: (1) in climate change - development of novel detectors for muon tomography to allow monitoring of CO2 stored underground to combat climate change, this involves collaboration with geo-physics groups and development of new instruments to be installed in deep bore-holes, the work involves using our test installations at the Boulby underground laboratory. (2) in medical physics – development of new positron emission tomography technology using novel liquid argon detectors, this involves work on new gas photomultiplier imaging devices aimed at producing a prototype PET unit with industry. (3) for homeland security – work to build a directional neutron detector for assay of hidden nuclear material. All the projects involve combinations of detector hardware development and simulations or analysis with links to industry. Other industrial related detector technology projects are also available.
