The School of Mathematical Sciences of Queen Mary University of London and Penteract 28 invite applications for a fully funded 3 years’ PhD studentship commencing in May 2016. The research project will deal with developing new topological and geometric algorithms for video data compression and with other problems of analysis of large data.
The question of how to store and, more pressingly, how to move vast amounts of data is one that is currently a research topic not just in data science but increasingly in physics, biology and the business world. Penetract 28 is a company which aims to use Information Density Holography (IDH), a compound technology making use of techniques such as Topological Data Analysis (TDA) combined with digital holography to achieve high levels of data compression.
This is a new innovation in the field that seeks to fundamentally address the big data problem. Unlike conventional holographic storage, IDH does not write out the resultant holograms to some physical storage medium. The data is kept within memory where it can be compressed and quickly accessed.
The project will be sponsored by Queen Mary University of London and by Penteract 28 and will be supervised by representatives of both institutions. The candidates must have basic knowledge of pure and applied mathematics; it is desirable that the candidates are familiar with geometry, topology, statistics, elements of computer science and data analysis.
This project is eligible for full funding, including support for 3.5 years’ study, additional funds for conference and research visits and funding for relevant IT needs. This project will be supervised by Professor Michael Farber.
