Project Description

Light pollution, an environmental problem brought by night outdoor lighting, significantly affects sustainability of an urban area on basis of ecological stability, human well-beings and energy conservation. It is currently difficult to predict and assess the potential of light pollution during a design and planning process of outdoor lighting systems in urban areas. The proposed PhD project aims to develop a practical model to assess both direct and inter-reflected light in an outdoor space installed with general lighting systems, and establish a holistic methodology to achieve a sustainable lighting design for lighting designers and engineers, urban and environmental planners. On the successful completion of the PhD study, the applicant is expected to implement physical measurements (lighting), numerical simulations and quantitative analysis, etc.

Funding Notes

Home/EU awards: Provides tuition fee, £1000 per year Training Support Grant and Stipend (Research Council minimum).
Overseas awards: Provides tuition fee, £1000 per year Training Support Grant, but no stipend.
