Project Description

Postgraduate research opportunity for ambitious candidates with at least a 2:1 degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science. Excellent students from a broad range of backgrounds with a strong interest in new materials are encouraged to apply.

The aim of this project is to use self-assembly approaches to discover new photocatalysts. The project will involve some synthesis, but a major focus will also be the use of powder X-ray diffraction as a structural characterization tool, coupled with other techniques such as high-throughput measurement of catalytic activity.

This project in the Liverpool Materials Chemistry group involves the design and synthesis of new functional organic materials under an ESPRC Programme Grant that combines experimental work with computational studies and a strong collaboration with University College London. You will work in the new £68M Materials Innovation Factory in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities (https://www.liv.ac.uk/materials-innovation-factory/). The overall aim of the project is to discover new step-change functional materials to address specific societal problems, such as clean energy.

Funding Notes

The award will pay full tuition fees and a maintenance grant for 3.5 years. The maintenance grant will be £14,057 for 2015/16.
