Project Description

Applications are invited for an EPSRC PhD studentship in the School of Chemistry at the University of Manchester to be carried out under the supervision of Professor M.L. Turner. The studentship offers an exciting opportunity to develop the organic materials and processes necessary to deliver printed electronic devices that mimic the way in which the human brain processes information. These brain-inspired devices will be at the core of future computing systems as they can increase the speed of computation and reduce power consumption. This project will develop the solution processable materials and the processes necessary to fabricate these devices. The specific objectives of the project are to develop: (i) solution processable semiconducting, dielectric and ferroelectric materials for low voltage OFET and FERROFET memory devices, (ii) processes for printing these materials and (iii) printing of neuromorphic circuits based on OFETs, FERROFETs and passive components (resistors and capacitors). Dr Leszek Majewski (EEE) will act as co-supervisor of the project and training in all aspects of the project will be supported by postdoctoral research associates of the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Large Area Electronics (iPESS and pNeuron projects).

Funding Notes

Funding
This project is to be funded under the EPSRC Doctoral Training Programme. This Studentship is for 3.5 years covering tuition fees and a stipend of £14,057 per annum for 2015/16. Eligibility restricted to UK/EU students.

Qualification
Applicants should have or expect a good I or II(i) honours degree (or an equivalent degree) in Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics and an enthusiastic approach to interdisciplinary research. An understanding of the principles of operation of organic electronic devices would be advantageous.
