About This PhD Project

Project Description

The University of Sussex Experimental Particle Physics group plays a critically important role in a number of experiments at the frontiers of our knowledge of particle physics, with main involvement in: the ATLAS experiment and its upgrades at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (Geneva, Switzerland), the Neutron EDM experiment at PSI (Switzerland), the SNO+ neutrinoless double beta decay experiment at SNOLAB (Canada) and the NOvA long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment at Fermilab (Chicago, Illinois, USA). We also have involvement in a direct Dark Matter search experiment DEAP at SNOLAB.

We are presently offering fully funded studentships available to UK and EU nationals on ATLAS and SNO+ projects for a September 2016 start. Funded studentships cover a tax free bursary (£14,057 per annum in 2015/16) and home/EU fees for 3.5 years. We also welcome applications from self-funded non-EU students interested in our experimental programme. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be held in February and March.

Award amount

Eligibility
Applicants must hold, or expect to hold, a UK Bachelor degree in Physics at first or upper second class, and/or a UK Master’s degree in Physics, or equivalent non-UK qualifications. A good standard of written and spoken English is essential.

Due to funding restrictions, the studentship is open to UK and EU resident students only. However, we also welcome applications from self-funded non-EU students

Further information
This is a full-time studentship and the successful candidate will be able to devote their whole time to research. With agreement of the supervisor the student may take on a limited amount of teaching, for which additional payment will be made.
