About the Project
The human immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody and its interactions with different receptors play key roles in the allergic response. However, gaining a full mechanistic insight into these processes and their role in allergy cannot be deduced without extending the current portfolio of structural techniques.
The over-arching aim of the project is to shed new light on the structure of human IgE and its interactions with receptors. To achieve this, we will bring together advanced mass spectrometry (MS)-based methods, X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy through computational data integration. This will enable us to probe the structural conformations and transient interactions observed in IgE-receptor complexes deducing novel insights about their function. The student will spend a period of time at Waters Corporation, a leader in the development of MS systems worldwide, working with experts in a range of life science-related areas and with state-of-the-art instrumentation.
ELIGIBILITY AND APPLICATION
This four-year studentship is funded jointly by the BBSRC London Interdisciplinary PhD Programme and Waters Corporation (Micromass UK Ltd). It covers UK/EU tuition fees and an annual tax-free stipend in the region of £16,057 (exact amount confirmed each year), plus additional stipend payment of £1800 per annum from the non-academic partner.
Applications will be considered from individuals with a background in chemistry, biological or computer sciences; the equivalent of a first or upper second-class degree is essential. A postgraduate degree in a relevant subject would be desirable, as would basic molecular biology skills, experience of computer programming (e.g. Python, R, or Matlab) and a demonstrable interest in chemical biology.
