Millimetre Wave & Microwave RF Circuit and Systems
Applications are invited for a 3 year Ph.D. studentship on the theme described below, as part of the Communications Research Group.
Research and design of RF systems and circuits continues to be a field where practitioners are in high demand and setting the direction of future communication technologies, such as emerging 5G.
The field of Millimetre wave circuit design has experienced a resurgence of interest, due to anticipated application to 5G systems, especially associated with Massive MIMO.
Underpinning future communications equipment will be cost-effective and low power (yet high performance) RF circuits, spanning the entire field of RF design.
The purpose of this research project is to investigate present state-of-the-art aspects of Millimetre and Microwave circuit design and then choose an area for further research, including (but not limited to):
• low power RF modulators / demodulators
• wideband modulators / demodulators
• Chireix RF Power amplifiers (including DSP)
• PCB & MMIC implementation of low-power, high-performance transceivers and subsystems (including oscillators)
Researchers can expect to become involved in designing hardware and software for their proposed system(s) and then trialling them in the Sheffield University Wireless Communications Lab. The University is working on 5G Massive MIMO systems and IoT systems; the technology emerging from the researcher’s chosen project will contribute to these research themes.
Awards for UK students cover course fees and a maintenance allowance (£14,296 per annum).
EU applicants who have resided in the UK for at least 3 years immediately preceding the start of their course are eligible for tuition fee and maintenance awards. EU applicants not meeting this residency criterion are eligible for a fees-only award and may be eligible for a maintenance allowance if they can demonstrate considerable aptitude.
Applications from exceptionally able students outside of the EU are also invited, but will only be eligible for tuition fee funding.
