How healthy are older migrants?

This is a funded PhD studentship in applied health research, involving quantitative methods to interrogate a large dataset. The project will look at the way health differs between migrants entering a country and the local population, and the way this varies with time of residence and as the migrant population ages. The work will use the Australian DYNOPTA dataset since Australia has a large foreign born population and the longitudinal dataset includes the relevant information for analysis; however the student will use generalizable skills and generate generalizable findings.

The project is suitable for a student with good quantitative skills (e.g. degree in statistics, computer science, geography etc.). The PhD will offer the opportunity to expand quantitative skills with demographic methods and standard measures of health inequalities. Interrogating large datasets is a key strategic area of the new Institute of Clinical and Applied Health Research which is being established at the University of Hull and the student’s research will be a part of that initiative. The student will join an active and expanding research group (SEDA: Supportive care, Early Diagnosis and Advanced disease) consisting currently of 7 academics, 8 research fellows and 12 research students.

Applicants require a strong academic record (minimum of undergraduate degree with class 2.1 or equivalent) and good English language ability (native speaker or IELTS 7.0). The studentship provides fees at home/EU rate and maintenance stipend (£14057 for 2015-16); or for international students a Fee Bursary covering full fees at the international rate only. PhD students at Hull York Medical School follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.
