Project Description

Applications are invited for a postgraduate research position leading to a PhD degree in School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.

Thermally driven adsorption refrigerators are systems to convert low-grade heat in useful cold using solid materials (adsorbent materials). No moving components are present in these systems and this makes them highly reliable compared with traditional technologies. They are particularly convenient when waste heat is available.

This project is oriented to the design and optimisation of a waste heat powered adsorption refrigeration system based on encapsulated liquid sorbents which offer much higher sorption capacity and sorption rates. Various encapsulated sorbents and refrigerant pairs will be investigated on the effectiveness of cooling power production. In this project the PhD student need to carry out both experimental design and tests of such a system as well as the computational modeling and optimization by writing code in Matlab or similar software. The experimental work will be processed within the brand new well-founded cryogenic lab (Birmingham Centre for Cryogenic Energy Storage: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/energy/research/centre-energy-storage/cryogenic-energy-storage/index.aspx). The student will also be engaged with a research team working on an EPSRC funded Thermal Energy Challenge project (EP/N021142/1).

Eligibility requirements:
To undertake this research, we are seeking a motivated candidate with a first class degree or upper second (or equivalent for non-UK students) or a combination of qualification and professional experience equivalent to that level, in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering or process engineering. Independent work, self-motivation, good team spirit and excellent communication skills are important assets of the successful candidate. The candidate has to demonstrate proof of proficiency in English if applicable. Candidate with some knowledge and experience in adsorption processes/systems or refrigeration systems will be particularly considered.
