Formulation and application of encapsulated chemical sorbents
Applications are invited for a postgraduate research position leading to a PhD degree in School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.
The encapsulation of chemical sorbents is a novel approach to produce composite adsorbents. The encapsulated chemical sorbents (such as calcium chloride, lithium chloride, calcium nitrate, lithium bromide etc.) can offer much higher sorption capacity and sorption rates comparing to conventional solid adsorbents (such as expanded graphite, activated carbon, active carbon fiber, zeolite, silica gel etc.). A good design of encapsulated sorbents depends on integrating the conflicting effects on mechanical stability, mass transfer and heat transfer. Simple encapsulation with thin shells will lead to excessively permeable and mechanically unstable structures; while thick shells will significantly decrease the concentration of sorbents and increase thermal resistance. In this project the PhD student need to develop new routes/processes for formulation of encapsulated sorbents and investigate the mechanical and thermal properties. The work will be experimental based within the brand new well-founded cryogenic lab (Birmingham Centre for Cryogenic Energy Storage: http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/energy/research/centre-energy-storage/cryogenic-energy-storage/index.aspx). The student will also be engaged with a research team working on an EPSRC funded Thermal Energy Challenge project (EP/N021142/1).
To undertake this research, we are seeking a motivated candidate with a first class degree or upper second (or equivalent for non-UK students) or a combination of qualification and professional experience equivalent to that level, in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material Science. Independent work, self-motivation, good team spirit and excellent communication skills are important assets of the successful candidate. The candidate has to demonstrate proof of proficiency in English if applicable.
Self-funded or home country funded students are welcome to apply this post. UK/EU rate funding is also possible depending on the quality of the applicant.
