Project Description

Digital technologies have rapidly demonstrated transformational impact on human lifestyles, wellbeing, social life, cultural experiences and the economy. It has become critically important to digitize human body and its internal structural features for the purpose of modelling and simulating the biological functions of human organ systems and/or entire body such as thermoregulation, biomechanics and sensory neurophysiology and biomedical functions. Clothing and/or textiles have been an inseparable part of human life to provide a portable living environment for every individual since the very beginning of human civilization. Digitization of clothing materials and garment designs and structural features are essential to model and simulate the biological functions of human body with dynamic interactions with clothing and/or textile materials and external environments. Such advanced digital technologies have wide applications and profound impact in many areas of the society and digital economy such as behaviour and lifestyle, wellbeing and healthcare, biomedical intervention, design, production and distribution of creative contents, supply chain management and e-business.

PhD students can select specific research topics in this area, depending on their own academic background and research interests. Novel strategies will be developed to study the dynamic interactions between the biological functional systems of human body and the corresponding functional behaviours of clothing materials. Computational models will be developed accordingly by integrating the life-science models of human body with physical models of clothing materials according to the design and structural features of the garments, as well as external living environments. The biological functional and structural features of human body organ systems will be digitized together with digitization of clothing structural features and functional properties of clothing materials by employing advanced testing equipment. Computational algorisms will be developed together with software architecture design, database design and software engineering. Digitised human biological health avatars will be developed to visualize the effects of the impact of clothing and external living environment on human health status in relation to their lifestyles, social behaviour, physical activities and geographic locations.

Funding Notes

Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree in one of the areas: physical science, life science, medicine, computer science, mechanical engineering, material science, textile engineering, apparel design and engineering.

Funding covers tuition fees and annual maintenance payments of at least the Research Council minimum (currently £14,057) for eligible UK and EU applicants. EU nationals must have lived in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the programme to be eligible for a full award (fees and stipend). Other EU nationals may be eligible for a fees-only award.
