Project Description

Recent studies have shown how soundfields with height can deliver perceptive improvements in naturalness, spaciousness, continuity, immersion and sound image dimension and can improve perception of soundfield integration with UHD video content. New audio formats incorporating height channels targeted at cinema could naturally enhance virtual reality experiences captured by video cameras rigs such as Google Jump, or immersive games by extending the soundfield to three dimensions. The benefits include new audio features facilitating the design of immersive sound-centric games and experiences with significant social, cultural, educational and healthcare gains. However, sonic immersion is difficult to achieve in the home, as it is impractical to have dozens of transducers around the living room. This proposal therefore focuses on the delivery of immersive 3-D binaural sound with height through loudspeakers located solely at the visual display. The proposed research will tackle challenges in the delivery of stable soundfields using new adaptive acoustic crosstalk cancellation and equalisation methods that exploit recent advances in motion tracking technologies.

Funding Notes

The studentship will cover the tuition fee at the home/EU rate (£4,165 in 2016/17) and a stipend at the standard research council rate for a period of 3 years (£14,057 in 2015/16) starting in October 2016.

Applicants should have or be about to graduate with at least an upper second class honours degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related subject.
