About the Project

The selected applicant will need to compete for internal PhD funding at Surrey (full fees and stipend), hence a 1st Class or good 2:1 degree from a research-intensive university is required. Due to funding conditions, only applicants who have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start date can be considered. Expected start date October 2016.
Applications are invited for a PhD project developing mathematical and computational models of tissue growth and development. The student will use a range of mathematical and computational techniques to address problems in developmental biology, with a strong focus on the role of mechanical effects. Ongoing research questions include: how do mechanical forces act to determine the size and shape of tissues? How are these processes influenced by cross-talk between mechanical and biochemical signalling? The applicant will require an enthusiasm for developing biological understanding, and working closely with biological and biomedical collaborators, as well As a strong mathematical background, with a Masters degree in Mathematics, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering or Physics.
