Experimental and computational studies of CVD diamond growth
This will be a 4-year project done as part of the CDT in Diamond Science and Technology. The first 6 months will be a taught Masters course spent at Warwick University doing lectures, practicals and training. This will be followed by a 3-month mini-research project at Newcastle University with Jon Goss (studying computer simulations of diamond) and then another 3-month mini-research project at Aberystwyth University with Andrew Evans (studying XPS studies of surface groups on diamond). The final 3 years will be based in the CVD diamond group (School of Chemistry) in the University of Bristol doing a PhD by research, supervised jointly by Prof Paul May and Prof Neil Allan. The PhD project will be 50% experimental (depositing and characterising diamond films using different conditions) and 50% computational (simulating diamond growth in 3D using our bespoke kinetic Monte Carlo program). The PhD is sponsored half by the EPSRC (via the CDT) and half by IIa, a CVD diamond gemstone company based in Singapore.
