Project Description

The EPSRC funded Sci-Phy-4-Health CDT is a 4 year integrated PhD programme and is recruiting highly motivated 1st class students from Physical Sciences background who will pursue a research degree to develop a range of new physical science to address and impact three of the most important healthcare challenges currently facing the UK:
• Rebuilding the ageing and diseased body
• Understanding cardiovascular disease
• Improving trauma and emergency medicine

The 4 year integrated PhD programme is designed such that the 1st year of the studies consists of taught and ‘mini-project’ modules to train and enhance the background knowledge of the candidate in all areas of Physical Sciences in Healthcare, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Sciences, as well as a range of public engagement and transferable skills. After the successful completion of the 1st year, the candidates choose and embark on the PhD research project.

Noninvasive optical imaging methods rely on multiple aspects of science, ranging from the development of molecular probes, imaging instrumentation, computational tools for image recovery, data analysis and biological sciences of normal and diseased tissue. We have established strong multi-disciplinary collaborations in this area and have a number of projects available that are centred on developing: (i) a multi-modal optical/CT based molecular imaging system incorporating structural CT information to enhance 3D image reconstruction from Near Infrared (NIR) data to allow quantitative evaluation of novel therapeutic methodologies for tumours
(ii) optical mapping imaging systems and computational methodologies to assess ventricular activation inhomogeneity in murine models to better understand the molecular causes of right ventricular cardiomyopathy and heart failure,
(iii) non-contact optical techniques for the measurement and detection of inflammatory disease in rheumatoid arthritis, based upon development of hyperspectral NIR imaging and complex multi-physics computational models.

Additionally, we have a number of projects available that are centred on developing new chemical probes, new imaging physics and new information processing strategies to track adhesion molecules, trans-membrane receptors, and the dynamic rearrangements of cytoskeletal proteins in vascular cells. The work will investigate luminescent nano-probes based on supramolecular and nanoparticle chemistries, which will be developed with controlled release based on a chemical stimulus such as a particular signaling event, which will allow functional imaging of relevant pathways.

Funding Notes

Each year the Doctoral Training Centre is able to offer a fully funded scholarship from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to UK students (tax free stipend £14,057 in 2015-2016).

We are now considering scholarship applications for course entry in 2016.

EU students are eligible for awards of tuition fees only but may also be eligible for stipend funding if they have studied or worked in the UK for at least 3 continuous years immediately prior to course entry.
