Project Description

Project will be based in: Academic Orthopaedics, Trauma and Sports Medicine, School of Medicine, University of Nottingham.

Project details: It is vital that the population is sufficiently physically active in order to maximise health. Currently only a third of British workers meet recommendations for physical activity and the majority are overweight or obese, which is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases. 3% of ‘disability adjusted life years’ are lost per annum directly due to physical inactivity, at a cost to the NHS of over £1 billion. Unsurprisingly current public health policy emphasises the importance of increasing physical activity in the general population. The problems with physical activity measurement are well documented. The need for valid, accurate and reliable measures of physical activity persist, particularly with a view to assessing the relationship between health outcomes and physical activity. Developing a validated tool to measure lifetime physical activity is necessary due to the latency of diseases associated with physical inactivity and the impact a lifetime of activity levels has on disease risk. Current methods show differing levels of validity and reliability, with greater effect for focused populations, suggesting a significant need for further research in this area. The primary aim of this study is to develop a tool to use lifetime physical activity levels to predict disease risk and translate this into a behavioural change aid.

As this project will involve mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) data collection and then translating results, the successful candidate could come from a wide variety of backgrounds. They will be enthusiastic about the topic, numerate and a team player who is willing to work hard.

The studentship is for 3 years and should start by October 2016.

Funding Notes

The studentship provides a tax free stipend of £14,000 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International students will be considered for this position, but will need to cover the shortfall in fees themselves.

Students will normally need to hold, or expect to gain, at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, such as human biology; sport science; a clinical degree; bio-statistics; epidemiology. A relevant Master’s degree and/or significant relevant work experience would be an advantage (not essential).
