About the Project

Magnetostriction films are used in wireless MEMS sensors, improving their properties will increase the sensitivity of these devices. This project involves the fabrication of Fe-Co-X films, where X can be Ga, B, V or a combination of the 3, using dc sputtering and evaporation, in an unique deposition chamber. The addition of B should produce amorphous films, which in principle could have higher magnetostriction constants compared to the crystalline films, while Ga is known to increase the magnetostriction constant.

The project will investigate how the magnetic and structural properties of the films vary with composition, with the aim to achieve films with large (>60ppm) magnetostriction constants. The magnetic and structural properties of these films will be characterised using a range of techniques, including magnetometry, XRD, AFM/MFM and electron microscopy.

Funding Notes

Candidates should be self-funded, sponsored, or applying for Scholarships. The University and the Faculty of Engineering award PhD scholarships for Home, EU, and International students on a competitive basis every year. The deadline for Faculty/University Scholarships is February each year - for more information see: www.shef.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/scholarships

Candidates should have or expect to gain a good Honours degree with 2i or above in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline.

If English is not your first language then you must have International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) average of 6.5 or above with at least 6.0 in each component.
