About the Project

Tissue ischemia (i.e. reduction or loss of blood supply) is the main consequence of cardiovascular diseases. In addition to its effects on tissue survival and function, the hypoxia (i.e. reduced oxygen levels) associated with ischemia affects the reactivity of platelets (i.e. circulating cells responsible for initiating blood clotting) and increases the risk of thrombosis (i.e. blood vessel occlusion due to excessive blood clotting). In this study, we will focus on the effect of hypoxia on the molecular signalling and functional regulation of human platelets. A clear understanding of the modification of platelet physiology in hypoxic condition will help designing new treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience with biochemical techniques (such as immunoblotting and flow cytometry) and blood cell isolation. Previous experience in the haemostasis and thrombosis filed and a background in animal handling will be desirable but not essential. This project will take place within the Advanced Hypoxic Imaging Facility of the University of Bath.
