About the Project

The increasing cost of production of commonly used composite materials in engineering applications has necessitated research into the use of natural fibre materials, which are readily available and considerably more economical during production and usage. The use of Fibre-reinforced composite materials based on natural fibres is advantageous in many folds. For example, they lend themselves to applications that are simple to construct and extremely versatile, ranging from applications in telecommunication to the rehabilitation of existing structures. Further advantages can also be derived from their enhanced mechanical properties, lower production costs, reduced emissions and energy consumption during production and disposal compared to common composite materials. In this project, the behaviour of natural fibres, particularly bamboo and basalt, will be investigated through an experimental campaign and an extensive finite element study. The work will focus on the behaviour of natural fibres under cyclic loading in order to understand their long term and fatigue behaviour. The experimental result will be used to validate numerical models after which extensive parametric studies on the behaviour of these natural fibres will be carried out.

Essential Background: Equivalent of 2.1 Honours Degree in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering.

Knowledge of: Finite element modelling, Experimental testing
