About the Project

Climate Warming and Multiple Stressors Interact to Impact Stream Ecosystem Functioning and Community Structure (气候变暖与多种环境干扰因子对溪流生 态系统功能及群落结构的影响)

Aquatic ecosystem functioning and biodiversity are threatened by multiple stressors caused by anthropogenic disturbances, such as global warming and environmental pollution. However, few empirical studies have assessed cumulative effects of multiple stressors with temporal variation on stream ecosystem structure. We will use a stream mesocosm system to experimentally explore the impacts of climate warming, agricultural nutrients, and sedimentation with a range of temporal variability on ecosystem functioning and biodiversity, in terms of leaf litter decomposition and community assemblage. We will manipulate increased nutrients (agricultural activity), deposited fine sediment (erosion caused by agricultural / urban disturbance) and increased water temperature (climate-induced warming) with a variety of temporal combination. We will examine if these stressors with different temporal combination will produce additive or antagonistic outcomes to leaf litter decomposition and benthic community assemblage. The implication of this project’s findings is to provide crucial and meaningful knowledge to managers for imposing effective and efficient ecosystem management and conservation.

Requirements
The candidate should have a first class or upper second class honours degree, or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification), in Ecology. Evidence of good spoken and written English is essential. The candidate should have an IELTS score of 6.5 or above, or an equivalent qualification, if the first language is not English. This position is open to all qualified candidates irrespective of nationality.

Funding Notes

The PhD studentship is available for three years subject to satisfactory progress by the student. The award covers tuition fees for three years (currently equivalent to RMB 80,000 per annum) and provides a monthly stipend of 3500 RMB as a contribution to living expenses. It also provides up to RMB 16,500 to allow participation at international conferences during the period of the award. It is a condition of the award that holders of XJTLU PhD scholarships carry out 300-500 hours of teaching assistance work per year. The scholarship holder is expected to carry out the major part of his or her research at XJTLU in Suzhou, China. However, he or she is eligible for a research study visit to the University of Liverpool of up to three months, if this is required by the project.
