About the Project

The annual incidence of and mortality from oesophageal cancer in the UK is high because these cancers are asymptomatic until late in the disease progression. Sadly, most patients are diagnosed with disease that cannot be cured with surgery. It is important to develop new treatments for patients with these cancers.

The research proposed will increase our understanding of this cancer and will allow us to evaluate new drugs that might be introduced for its treatment in the future.

Key goals are to:

1. Establish of useful laboratory models of oesophageal cancer cell behaviour in which to test potential drugs.
2. Investigate how many patients with cancers in their oesophagus might benefit from the novel drugs.
3. Test the effectiveness of the new cancer drugs in laboratory models of oesophageal cancer

The student will be based primarily in the Northern Institute for Cancer Research. They will receive full training in human cell culture, DNA, RNA and protein extraction, real time PCR and western transfer analysis, cell-based assays of cell proliferation, cell survival and cell motility, construction of tissue microarrays, immunohistochemistry, image flow cytometric analysis of circulating tumour cells, retrieval of pathological and clinical information, database management and statistical analysis. The student appointed will gain expertise in a wide range of preclinical and translational research activities within a university and an NHS hospital environment.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants should hold a first-class or good upper-second-class degree and have an interest in cancer research. A masters degree would be an advantage. Applicants with a medical degree will be considered.

The award is available to UK/EU applicants only.
