About the Project
Coventry University
Health and Life Sciences- Faculty Research Centre for Applied Biological and Exercise Sciences
Full-Time – three years fixed term or Part-Time – five years fixed term
Exercise training as a therapeutic intervention has become the cornerstone of treatment in many clinical populations. Exercise guidelines are well established in patient groups such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease. However, there is no consensus as to the most appropriate modality, intensity or duration of exercise in patients with chronic kidney disease. Exercise training during dialysis has grown in popularity, but the evidence base is limited as to the benefits of exercising patients during haemodialysis in comparison to non-dialysis days.
The purpose of the project is to contribute to the development of safe and effective evidence based guidelines for intradialytic exercise training. To address this, cardiovascular and metabolic responses to graded maximal exercise and constant workload exercise will be evaluated.
The successful student will work collaboratively with the team at Atrium Health, University Hospital, Coventry and Coventry University.
The Centre furthers the understanding of fundamental biological pathways and processes; applying biological sciences to advance diagnosis and prevention of disease.
Our aim is to enhance Coventry University’s reputation for evidence-based scientific research of excellent quality, across a range of areas and discipline boundaries, to create an inter-disciplinary continuum of expertise that extends and develops our understanding across Applied Biological and Exercise Sciences.
The University has considerable strengths in high quality publications in Applied Biological and Exercise Sciences, ranging from expertise in cell biology, genomic and molecular biology, biochemistry, safety pharmacology, physiology, physical activity and exercise. We currently have particular strengths in scientific research that investigates life processes to lay the foundation for advances in disease diagnosis and prevention.
In collaboration with UHCW NHS Trust, Atrium Health delivers a wide range of exercise programmes for clinical populations. In the pursuit of evidence based practice and to further the understanding of exercise training in disease, Atrium Health leads and collaborates on clinical exercise trials. At the Centre for Exercise & Health, a vibrant and stimulating environment provides a unique opportunity to develop essential clinical skills and competences whilst engaging in applied translational research.
Please contact Dr Elizabeth Horton [Email Address Removed] or Dr Gordon McGregor [Email Address Removed] for an initial informal discussion about the opportunity.
