About the Project

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at Oxford Brookes University is pleased to offer a full-time PhD Studentship, funded jointly by ELG Carbon Fibre Ltd and by the University, starting in January 2017. Applications are invited for a PhD Studentship in ‘A technical and environmental appraisal of recycled carbon fibre materials’. The supervisory team will be led by Professor Allan Hutchinson, with Dr Pat Winfield. The overall aim of the project is to evaluate and predict the short- and long-term properties of composites made with recycled carbon fibre materials. A further aspect of the project is to undertake whole life cycle assessments of the use of recycled carbon fibre in polymer composite applications. The research team will work closely with ELG Carbon Fibre Ltd, the only commercial carbon fibre recycling organization in the UK. A full project description will be provided in the application pack.

The successful candidate will receive a fixed annual payment of £14,000 for a maximum of three years as a stipend for living expenses, subject to satisfactory progress.
