About the Project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory for Nanostructured and Molecular Photonics has openings for motivated students the area of Molecular Photonics. The PhD student will work towards developing electrically-pumped organic lasers, one of the "holy grails" of organic electronics and on generating "quantum" states of light using molecules embedded within optical microcavities. Coursework and interest in optics, lasers, semiconductor devices, solid-state physics and quantum mechanics are good indicators of the candidate’s suitability for this project. The student will have the opportunity to participate in all facets of the project from design and modelling, to fabrication and characterization.

RESEARCH GROUP (http://www.polymtl.ca/lnmp/en/index.php)

Professor Kéna-Cohen is the Canada Research Chair in Hybrid and Molecular Photonics and has been at Polytechnique since 2014. Previously, he worked with some of the top researchers in the field of organic electronics and is renowned for his work on organic polariton lasers. His Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and has access to some of the best characterization and nanofabrication equipment in Canada. Students are expected to be able to work independently, but within a collaborative atmosphere so that every member of the group can have a productive and successful PhD experience. To accommodate students from all background, Lab meetings are run in English.

POLYTECHNIQUE MONTREAL

Polytechnique Montréal is one of Canada’s largest engineering universities. Its mission consists of: i) providing high-quality engineering training at every level, with a focus on human values; ii) carrying out pertinent, high-level research as the basis for high-quality training at the master’s and doctorate levels ; iii) wielding social and intellectual influence, concretely achieved through interactions with external communities both at home and abroad. Every year, approximately 2000 students pursue graduate studies at Polytechnique. Since its foundation in 1873, it has trained over 42,000 engineers, scientists and researchers. French is the "official" language, but a number of graduate courses are given in English within the department. Moreover, students are free to take graduate-level courses at McGill University and University of Montreal.

LOCATION

Polytechnique is located in the heart of Montreal, on the University of Montreal Campus. Montreal is the most vibrant and multicultural city in Canada and hosts 9 universities and some 180,000 students from all over the world in its metropolitan area (ranking second in North America for the number of university students per capita). It is home to many music and arts festivals and only hours away from mountains for winter sports (skiing) and outdoor activities (hiking, canoeing). Housing in Montreal is amongst the most affordable within major cities within North America.

APPLYING

Prospective students should directly contact Prof. Kena-Cohen ([Email Address Removed]) with a CV and official transcripts. Applications are accepted from students worldwide and the position is fully funded. Exceptional students will be eligible for generous fellowships ($50,000/annum) and special fellowships are available for gifted students from Canada, Brazil, Mexico, India, China and Belgium. Fellowship deadlines are in October so students interested in applying for these should contact Prof. Kena-Cohen several months in advance.

Selected candidates will be contacted by e-mail for an interview.
