About the Project

The award will provide you with a first-rate, challenging research training experience, within the context of a mutually beneficial research collaboration between the University of Southampton and Star Financial Systems, a leading provider of trading and accounting systems to financial investment firms in the City of London. The award will provide you with access to training, facilities and expertise not available in an academic setting alone. You will benefit from a diversity of experimental approaches with an applied dimension. This studentship will provide you with an opportunity to develop a range of valuable skills and significantly enhance your future employability. You will be paid a stipend at the RCUK rate (£14,296) and all tuition fees at the UK/EU rate will be paid.

Project Description:

The aims of the project are to: (i) develop and employ advanced statistical, econometric and machine learning techniques to better understand the trading behaviour of individuals in speculative financial markets, (ii) develop means by which trading and market conditions data can be combined to produce real-time predictions of directions and volumes of trading activity in a given market. The project will be undertaken with the support of Star Financial Systems. The Award holder will spend some time on placement with Star Financial Systems.

Entry Requirements:

The normal minimum entrance requirement is:
• A good Masters degree from a leading UK university or equivalent overseas/professional qualification in an appropriate subject or a First Class honours BSc in exceptional cases.

Background/Skills Required:

Detailed understanding and knowledge of at least two of the following:
• Behavioral Finance, Credit Scoring, Psychology, Statistics, /Risk Analysis, Computing
• Mathematical/Statistical analysis.
• Management of large databases
• Statistical packages (e.g. R, Matlab).
• Programming and Database Skills (e.g. Java, SQL)
