About the Project
Application Deadline: Asap
Start Date: ASAP
Eligibility: UK, EU, International
Supervisors:
Dr. Hongmei He – Lecturer in Cyber Security for Manufacturing and Information Intelligence
Professor Ashutosh Tiwari – Head of Manufacturing Informatics Centre
Internet of Things, Machine Learning and Robotics are high priorities for developers in 2016. The concept of the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) (ABI Research) has been raised by integrating the three priorities, where intelligent devices can monitor events, fuse sensor data from a variety of sources, use local and distributed “intelligence” to determine a best course of action, and then act to control or manipulate objects in the physical world, and in some cases while physically moving through that world. It will also examine the many ways IoT technologies and robotic “devices” intersect to provide advanced robotic capabilities, along with novel applications, and by extension, new business, and investment opportunities.
The PhD programme aims to train the next generation of innovators in the growing field of IoT enabled Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS), one of the UK’s Eight Great Technologies for future growth.
This PhD allows the student to explore the latest technical trends and challenges in robotics, and it will enhance the student’s ability to tackle complex intellectual and practical aspects of real robotic techniques, machine learning and IoT technology with advanced sensor technologies.
The student will be based Manufacturing Informatics Centre, which is a part of the Manufacturing and Materials Department at Cranfield University.
Entry requirements:
Applicants should have a first or upper second class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline, such as robotics /cybernetics /electronic and computer engineering/Computer Science related disciplines. Overseas candidates should have equivalent degree in the disciplines above. It would be better to have MSc degree in relevant areas and industry experience. The ideal candidate should have
1. Good analytical and numerical skills with a well-rounded academic background.
2. Ability to develop machine learning algorithms and/or cloud platform.
3. Ability to develop robotic systems.
4. Ability to analyse and solve problems.
5. Background in programming, such as MatLab, C++, Java and/or Python.
6. A professional and self-motivated work attitude is essential for successful candidates
7. Skills to provide high quality presentations and publish academic papers
8. English capability required by the UK board agency for overseas students
