About the Project
I am looking for a strong PhD candidate to work with us on the following PhD project:
Disentangling the effects of multiple anthropogenic stressors on marine biodiversity and ecosystem functioning – including invasive species
This research will also explore the influence of environmental context on the relationships between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.
I am a community ecologist and marine biologist interested in understanding the impacts of global change on the functioning and stability of coastal ecosystems. Current projects include the Marine Ecosystem Research Programme (http://www.marine-ecosystems.org.uk/), Sea Gas (http://seagas.co.uk/) and the Zostera Experimental Network (ZEN; http://zenscience.org/).
The O’Connor Lab (see http://pure.qub.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/nessa-oconnor(c14384e5-c7af-4ef5-9f43-f6dc9449558a).html) is currently based at Queen’s University Belfast but will move to Trinity College Dublin in January 2017. We use a mainly empirical approach (field and lab experiments) to test fundamental ecological questions (e.g. does biodiversity promote recovery after disturbance?) and their applications (e.g. can we restore biogenic reefs to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem functioning?).
To apply, please send a (i) CV and (ii) cover letter outlining your research interests and why you would like to do a PhD to:

Funding Notes
Currently I am seeking highly qualified students to apply for funding from the Irish Research Council.
The IRC fund 4-year PhD fellowships which cover a €16,000p.a. stipend, tuition fees and research costs. The IRC is competitive and uses the calibre of the student as one of their main assessment criteria. Therefore excellent grades, research experience and publications will improve chances of success. The next deadline for applications is the 2nd November 2016, with a start date for the PhD of 1st October 2017. Applications are submitted by the prospective student together with their supervisor.
