About the Project

Background: The integration of advanced practice into healthcare systems is a significant development in the organisation of the health care workforce, requiring a mind shift by policymakers, managers and health professionals (Schober et al 2016). In the UK, ‘Advanced Clinical Practice’ (ACP) is being developed through the provision programmes of postgraduate study for non-medical professional groups. They are designed to prepare staff to undertake new advanced roles in diverse clinical settings. A programme and role requirement is the development of leadership skills to bring about changes/advances in practice.
Little is known about the learning experiences of non-medical health professionals who undertake ACP Programmes, and even less is known about their leadership experiences as they attempt to implement the skills they have developed on the programme.

Project: The purpose of this project is to investigate the impact of leadership on the development of advanced clinical practice in a number of clinical settings. Comparative in-depth case studies investigating the relationship of leadership to advanced clinical practice will be undertaken. This will involve exploration of the concept of the ‘boundary spanner’ as a means of tracing the development of the leadership role in advanced clinical practice.
