About the Project
Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship available for immediate entry for a project investigating two-phase multiphase flows with advanced optical-diagnostic techniques. The project will be funded through the Transient Multiphase Flows (TMF) consortium, which comprises a number of oil-and-gas companies, software- and design-houses, and will be supervised by Dr Christos Markides and Professor Omar Matar in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London, and supported by Total.
This effort is part of a broader activity in the Department of Chemical Engineering that involves the development and application of cutting-edge laser-based measurement techniques for the generation of highly detailed, previously unavailable information in complex interfacial and multiphase flows.
The project addresses an industrial need to develop an understanding of horizontal gas-liquid stratified flows through fundamental research into near-wall shear-stress and interfacial-stress behaviour, with a specific focus on the circumferential distribution of stresses around the pipe, and an appreciation of the interfacial-stress, instability and transport mechanisms in these flows, and how these affect wave dynamics and flow development.
The project aims are to obtain “first-of-a-kind” high-resolution data concerning the spatiotemporal distribution of the two phases along with the full velocity fields in both phases, leading to new information on the circumferential distribution of wall shear-stresses and interfacial stresses in the pipe flows of interest.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in chemical, mechanical or aeronautical engineering, or an equivalent or related field of study. They should be keen to perform interdisciplinary research, and to interact with the TMF consortium and the projects industrial sponsors. The project will involve collaborations with other research groups at Imperial, in the UK and internationally.

Funding Notes
UK/EU and overseas candidates will all be considered, however, funding is only available to cover the tuition fees of UK citizens and EU citizens who have resided in the UK for the past three years (for rates see: http://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/pg/fees-and-funding/tuition-fees/2017-18/postgraduate-research-programmes/faculty-of-engineering). The studentship is for 3 years starting as soon as possible and will provide, beyond the full coverage of tuition fees, an annual tax-free stipend of approximately £17,009.
