Project Description
The focus of the doctoral research program will be to engage in research focused on the study of the immune response and nutritional management of equine endocrine disorders of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction, equine metabolic syndrome/obesity/laminitis and geriatric horse healthcare. Opportunities exist to combine applied nutrition research with cutting edge exploration using whole animal investigation (equine), cell culture, flow cytometry, ELISAs, and molecular biology research techniques. This position will provide a unique opportunity to interact with and gain experiences with WALTHAM Equine Studies group.

Preferred qualifications include enthusiasm, a strong academic record, and a desire to work at the interface of nutrition and immunology and the equine industry. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s of Science degree or a Master’s of Science degree in animal science, agriculture, veterinary science, or the biological sciences before the end of Fall 2016 semester, with an anticipated start date for the PhD program being January 3, 2017 (Spring term). The University of Kentucky, Department of Veterinary Science requires individuals entering into a PhD program hold a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher and a combined GRE score greater than 300. Previous experience in equine science, animal science, veterinary science or general animal physiology is strongly recommended. Good professional, communication, organization, and teamwork skills are essential.
