About the Project

3 year PhD studentship in 3D printed implants for drug delivery
Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham

The project will be part of a collaboration between the School of Engineering and the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham. You will have access to one of the most comprehensive Additive Manufacturing (3D-Printing) laboratory facilities in the world and a state-of-the-art Nanotechnology and NanoScience Centre. For more information, please visit https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/3dprg and http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/nmrc .

Project description:
3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing offers the potential for bespoke, personalised treatments through the utilisation of the geometrical freedom inherent in the technique. Ink jet printing in particular allows for multimaterial deposition, allowing for not only geometrical freedom, but compositional freedom as well. We will exploit these technological advantages to create personalised implant devices using 3D printing, whereby the devices are able to elute more than one drug and in a manner that is tailored specifically to the needs of the patient. The PhD is a collaborative effort between Engineering and Pharmacy and will involve the development of 3D printing techniques suitable for the production of biocompatible materials as well as the development of characterisation approaches to understand the material properties and their effect on drug release in vivo.

The project will be supervised by Prof Ricky Wildman and Prof Clive Roberts.

• Due to funding restrictions, the position is only available for UK or EU candidates
• Candidates must possess or expect to obtain, a 2:1 degree in Engineering, Physics or Science related discipline.
