About the Project

The aim of this PhD project is to enhance the performance of sources of single photons based on speciality optical fibre that you will fabricate at the University of Bath. The project will build on our recent advances in single photon sources that incorporate active switching (Optica 3, 1270 (2016)) as well as our current work on frequency conversion of individual photons. Drawing on these capabilities will enable you to develop robust single photon sources suitable for integration with quantum-enhanced technologies.

Single photons are a vital resource for implementing advanced communication, sensing, and information-processing tools that will exploit the power of quantum physics to outperform current capabilities. Suitable photons can be generated in pairs using frequency conversion techniques driven by high-power pulsed lasers. In this project, you will work to develop photon-pair generation ultilizing the unique capabilities of the optical fibre that you will fabricate here in Bath. Known as photonic crystal fibre, it guides light within a matrix of air holes that run along the length of the fibre, and the properties of the fibre can be engineered by controlling its structure. Combined with active switching, this fibre enables the production of very high-quality single photons for use in next-generation quantum technologies.

The project will involve theoretical and numerical analysis, fabrication, laboratory work making use of state-of-the-art equipment, and writing up results. You will develop the full range of skills required for high-impact scientific research and also enhance your communication and transferrable skills. You will have the opportunity to present your work at leading international conferences and publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.

You will be based at the University of Bath in the Centre for Photonics and Photonic Materials (CPPM). The CPPM is an active research group based in the Department of Physics at the University of Bath with a lively and tight-knit cohort of postgraduate students. The Centre conducts world-leading research across a broad range of research areas within photonics. The supervisor of this project, Dr Peter Mosley, leads a growing and well-resourced research group in quantum optics within the CPPM and is a member of the Oxford-led Networked Quantum Information Technologies Hub.

For more information please see:
CPPM website: http://www.bath.ac.uk/research/centres/cppm/

Anticipated start date: 2 October 2017.

NOTE: Applications may close earlier than the advertised deadline if a suitable candidate is found; therefore, early application is strongly recommended.

Funding Notes

The successful candidate will be awarded a full studentship provided by the Oxford-led EPSRC Quantum Technology Hub “Networked Quantum Information Technologies”, covering Home/EU tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of £14,553 (2017/18 rate) for 3 years.

The studentship is open to UK and EU students who have been resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the project.
