About the Project
Multiferroic materials, bismuth ferrite (BFO), have attracted great attention due to the coexistence of ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, offering new physics and possible application for future devices. The room temperature multiferroic with T_c ~ 1100 K and T_n ~ 650k exhibits one of the largest spontaneous electric polarization, P ~ 80 microC/cm^2 . Despite so, the understanding of their domain walls motion in contribution to properties of ferroelectricity remains poor. This project is to conduct a systematic investigation on the evolution of domains structures in BFO and on how the properties are affected by the domain walls. It aims at studying the fundamental physics of interactions between the ferroelectric domain walls and structure-property relation as devices continue to scale down in dimensions.
Your role:
- To grow BFO and doped BFO ceramics.
- To prepare of whole array of characterization techniques related to materials science.
- To advance the fundamental understanding and control over ferroelectric domain
switching at nanoscales as the result of applied electric field
Selection criteria:
- Candidates with physics, materials science or nanoscience background with minimum equivalent to H2A is favourable for the position
- Good command of English. For Foreign students, acceptable IETLS or TOEFL scores:
(a) IELTS: An overall band score of not less than 6.5 on the IELTS with a score of at least 6.0 is required for each band score.
(b) TOEFL: A minimum total score of 577 together with a score of 5 or more on the TOEFL test of Written English (TWE) (paper based score, or a minimum total score of 91 (internet based score) together with a minimum score of 25 in the written test and a minimum score of 22 in each of the reading, speaking and listening tests.
(c) Note: Tests that are taken more than two years prior to application will not be accepted
- Candidates must have a strong commitment to scientific research and eager to work in an interdisciplinary environment
Conditions of offer:
The scholarship covers monthly stipend of MYR 2,200 and will increase subject to candidate’s performance. Candidates meeting the academic requirement will be given a full tuition fee waiver. Candidates with a Master (by research) degree can enrol as a direct PhD student, while candidates without a Master degree will enrol as a Masters student, before undergoing a conversion examination at the end of the first year of their candidature. Upon enrolment, the candidate is required to complete two Masters of Advanced Engineering units that will be on offer in Monash University Malaysia within their first year. The candidate is also encouraged to develop wider skills by attending advanced courses currently offered at Monash University by a range of disciplines. The candidate is also encouraged to learn and adopt academic skills of effective dissemination of research results by participating in workshops and conferences and by publishing all research output in peer-reviewed high impact journals. At the completion of the PhD program here in Malaysia, the student will earn an Australian degree conferred by Monash University.
