About the Project

Surface and lubricant interactions of rolling contacts such as bearings, gears and clutches in automotive, energy and industrial applications, are mostly established experimentally based on trial and error without full fundamental understanding of the systems. Simulation of surface interactions and influences of environment and operating conditions based on multiscale modelling is highly demanded by industry to reduce the risk of costly solutions.

This project, sponsored by Schaeffler Group, aims to better understand surface and lubricant interactions of tribological contacts such as bearings and motor systems using multiscale modelling techniques including molecular dynamics, computer fluid dynamics, finite element analysis and contact simulation.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Tribology Centre (nCATS) and the Computation Chemistry department within the University as well as the Schaeffler Group in Germany.

Applicants with strong mechanical engineering (tribology, materials, lubrication, etc.) background and strong interests in numerical modelling and simulation are welcome to apply for the studentship or get in touch to find more details about this research project.
