Congratulations on taking your first steps toward a Research Degree as part of the Data Driven Research and Innovation collaborative programme. As an ambitious and innovative University, we’re investing an initial £100m into our new research strategy, ‘Excellence with Impact’. Through original approaches from world-leading experts, we’re aiming for our research to make a tangible difference to the way we live. As a research student you are an integral part of Coventry’s lively and diverse research community and contribute to our reputation for excellence. With our exceptional facilities and superb support mechanisms you are afforded every opportunity for academic success.
THE PROJECT
This PhD is led by Coventry University in partnership with the University of West England (UWE) and one of the UK’s leading specialist care facility providers. It will consider how the use of robotics in specialist elderly care environments can support their health, care and wellbeing and the carer resident relationships. It will consider how appropriate robotic embodiments can capture data and provide analytics and support in a non-intrusive manner, and complement other technologies and systems being used. It will also consider the conditions under which additional robotic functionality and interaction could be deployed over time once the initial embodiment(s) and its value delivery are well established.
The PhD project will develop an integrated holistic methodology that combines data gathering, analysis and representation approaches from domains such as social science, product design, psychology and mathematics. The proposed use of robotics is ground-breaking and will involve working closely with the residential partner to understand the particular issues and opportunities that exist, and how robotics can generate insights and value in these areas that would otherwise not have been possible.
This PhD aligns closely with a sister PhD led by UWE involving Coventry University and the same residential partner, which focuses on intelligent data processing and data fusion to create a platform for the introduction of cognitive assistants and agents.
