About the Project

Loughborough University is a top-ten rated university in England for research intensity (REF2014) and an outstanding 66% of the work of Loughborough’s academic staff who were eligible to be submitted to the REF was judged as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, compared to a national average figure of 43%.

In choosing Loughborough for your research, you’ll work alongside academics who are leaders in their field. You will benefit from comprehensive support and guidance from our Graduate School, including tailored careers advice, to help you succeed in your research and future career.

Project Detail:
Making cutting edge products requires processes that are controlled by accurate, precise and robust data. To automatically measure a wide range of features distributed in a complex 3D space, requires sensors that can be mounted to a robot or other machine and used in a factory setting.

The PhD project aims to address the need for high performance in factory measurement and inspection technology. The project will first involve understanding the limits posed by current state-of-the-art sensor when they are used in factory conditions with variable environmental conditions such as temperature, light, humidity, vibration, etc. It will then focus on creating strategies to correct or compensate for these errors. Methods investigated will include advanced data analytics, process simulation, and creating novel calibration artefacts.

The candidate will be based at Loughborough University’s Wolfson School of Mechanical & Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering. They will have direct access to the large collection of high performance industrial robotics and inspection technologies available in the EPSRC Innovative Manufacturing Centre in Intelligent Automation; they will also have access to the state-of-the-art newly refurbished advanced optics laboratory facilities, and an industry standard metrology laboratory.

Entry requirements:
The candidates must be expecting, or have obtained a first class honours or good upper second class degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or other relevant subject. Good communication and computational skills are essential and an interest in, and basic understanding of sensing technologies, data analysis techniques and machine learning is desirable.

Funding information:
The studentship will start in October 2017, for three years, and currently provide a tax-free stipend of £14,553 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (currently £4,195 p.a.).
