About the Project

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for the following project.

Closing date: - 20th March 2017

Studentships will start on 25th September 2017
Project Description
This PhD project involves the development of planning and simulation models for Operations & Maintenance (O&M) activity scheduling in the area of Off-Shore Wind. In particular, the research will look at methods and algorithms for integrating live and archived IoT sensor data to plan activities and manage disruptions. O&M activities span a broad range of classical activities from spare part management, to the development of efficient inspection, maintenance and repair schedules, and the generation of optimal routes to visiting the towers that can be dynamically adjusted. However, the environmental issues posed by offshore-wind requires considerations of additional factors such as wind and tides, availability of vessels and the appropriate crew, and new human factor considerations that previously have never been studied together. New developments in IoT together with the concept of smart wind farms, promises the availability of real time data to develop a new wave of dynamic planning and the scheduling of algorithms. The models will be developed in collaboration with industrial partners.

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in engineering or computer science with expertise in operations research/simulation techniques, and familiarity with IoT interfacing. They should also be able to develop cloud-based applications integrating an optimisation and simulation engine on the server side.

Full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarships will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£14,553 in 2017/18) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.

Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependent on satisfactory progress.

PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.

Successful applicants will be informed of the award as soon as possible and by 8th May 2017 at the latest.
