About the Project

This project aims to define and validate in practice a standards-based technology and information framework for the creation of toolset to support shared decision-making by patients and healthcare professionals. The project will use the development of a decision aid for insertion of grommets as the test case for validating this framework.

There is strong evidence that shared decision aids improve patient practitioner communication and increase people’s ability to make informed, values-based decisions. The benefits of shared decision-making are recognized within national healthcare strategies as supporting self-management, promoting person-centred care, and preventing over-use of medical interventions.

This project will provide technology and information management tools, standards and guidance to support development of digital aids for shared decision-making to consistent quality standards. Key activities will include:

• Defining technology and information management criteria that can be used to assess the quality of shared decision aids. This is likely to involve a combination of literature review, stakeholder consultation, and scoping of existing shared decision toolsets regarded as good practice examples. Criteria would be expected to cover multiple perspectives on information and technology quality - for example, adherence to key principles of human-computer interaction, support for accessibility, interoperability and information governance standards, multi-channel delivery, compliance with transparent communication standards, deployment of recognized architectural frameworks.
• Applying these criteria to the development of a shared decision toolset for insertion of grommets and validating the robustness of the resulting product.
• Converting the quality criteria into guidance and tools that can be used by other developers of shared decision aids, and testing the usability and impact of these resources.

Funding Notes

Successful candidates will receive an annual stipend (currently £14,296) per annum for three years and payment of tuition fees (current value £4052). Applicants are advised that funding will be considered as part of a competitive round and there is no guarantee that it will be awarded. Successful applicants will be expected to contribute up to 6 hours/week to UWS academic related activities. Studentships are open to Home/EU candidates with a first degree in a relevant discipline. Non-EU students can apply, but will not receive the stipend and will be required to pay fees.
